what's going on here? on this tiny list of less than 50, i've seen at least 3-5 members saying that within the next year, they are moving to turkey... i guess everyone's heard about what a great country this is... but hey, don't tell everyone...if THEY all move HERE, then we're going to have to move there...or elsewhere!!
seriously, what's going on? those of you that are planning a move here, why? i suspect you were here on holiday, liked what you saw, met a couple of cute guys or chicks and thought...ahhhh, yabanci* heaven. (foreigner*)
is that it??

I was sent out here because I didnt have much choice. I had to vacate the house I was living in, in the Uk and was waiting for my ship to come to port to start my new job. That ship (QE2) went and damaged itself and went to dry dock for months. Now I was faced with waiting a few weeks for the ship to be repaired but with no where to live or take the next plane in the morning to open a new casino in Izmir. So I chose Izmir has I didnt want to pay for finding accomodation for a few weeks. Thats how I ended up here. Besides the fact I wasnt given a round trip ticket when I flew over.

My story isnt as interesting as starmans but...
I started coming over to Turkey in 1995 to visit family, I loved it so much I've come back a couple times a year ever since. When I was getting ready to graduate in 2002 I decided to move over here and see how it went. It didnt go so well and I left after 5 or 6 months, I was trying to escape a crazy exboyfriend.
Once I got home I missed Istanbul too much and I was really bored and fed up with life in Chicago. I started searching for a job, found one and came right over. The job was hell and I lived in an awful part of town, but I still loved it.
I think one of the best things that I did was to come here alone this time. I didnt have a boyfriend and I didnt talk to the people I knew in the past as much. It really helped me to learn to live here on my own without anyones help. I had noticed in the past that since all my friends and family spoke Englsih I never tried to speak Turkish. Once I cut myself off from them my Turkish started improving day by day (still not perfect or even close to it, but its a lot better than before).
I always wonder what brings people who have no family or friends here. It was a semi obvious choice for me, since I have tons of family here.
I would love to hear other peoples stories too.

Why am I moving to Turkey? A good question, I don't really know how to explain, but here goes! I was facing a complete new start in life, my wife and myself have mutually agreed to go our separate ways (no bad feelings, just grown apart) - the company I work for is rapidly heading for 'self-destruct' and the 'Early-Retirement' package was looking good. I have always wanted to retire to the sun, although my main experience of this was living in Cyprus for a few years back in the mid-eighties. I was thinking of going to Spain, but was getting bored looking at Spanish property websites with apartment after apartment after apartment - until one of them had a little window that said "Check out our property in Turkey." Once I saw what was on offer, I began to dig deeper and to look around the internet. I could buy myself a nice villa here in my price range. I had never been to Turkey in my life, but had met Turkish people in Cyprus and I remembered the leisurely pace of life - their warm and friendly nature - the seemingly total lack of stress. So I came out to Kusadasi in October 2004 with the sole purpose of looking at property. Had a good look - found a villa with magic views over the coast - and that's it really. I am coming back for a week in November to finalise things and get the deeds then I will move in around Feb/March 2005. I am making a start at learning the language and the area I am buying into is mainly Turkish, which is what I wanted. So my decision is not based on a holiday experience - or on meeting the Turkish girl of my dreams - it's just that I've had enough of the rat race of life in UK and I want to slow down and enjoy. Will I make a success of it? I like to think so, I have a keen sense of humour, a reasonable level of tolerance, and a respect for the people whose country I will be living in. I'll keep you posted.

Do many foreigners who come to Turkey on holiday decide to live in Istanbul? I would have thought they would opt to live in the seaside resorts not up here! The foreigners I know have mainly come for marriage, some for work and one for a different life (short-term though). Retiring here seems popular nowadays as Turkey gets rid of bad images. Women tend to follow their men here, in my experience, then realise they can't get a job but can drink lots of coffee! I came with my boyfriend who came for work. I don't like coffee

I cant say I came here for love or money. I was sick of the US and I love Istanbul so it seemed like a good choice. But your right I think most women do move here for a man. To answer your question about tourist who move here, no they dont usually live in Istanbul. For people who fall in love with the scene in the resort towns Istanbul wouldnt be their cup of tea. Those places are nothing like Turkey (well Istanbul isnt either). But I always feel bad for those older women who fall in love with soem guy and then move here to support him just to find out he is already married with kids in the village. I think i would do my research before making any big moves, but maybe I'm not romantic like them...

The babe in the tight white slip is either kelly or osiere, as for julius ceasar in the indian saree turned toga, he has no name!
