I found them to be a waste of time. Using contacts is much better.

definitely contacts are the way to go in any job search situation, however, executive recruiters have their place in this world too. especially for someone who doesn't have a strong network here, or simply as an additional channel for the job hunt.

When I was looking I tried a load of agencies but they were terrible on returning calls, emails, faxes etc. People should be aware of this big problem here before they start! The professionalism is nothing like the UK for instance (even from the UK agencies here)! Other than that...good luck!!!

executive recruiters in general are not in the business of searching for jobs for employees...that is the main reason an executive recruiter does not answer or return phone calls, and most of the time won't even respond to emails. that by itself has nothing to do with professionalism. i even have to say that executive recruiters in turkey do have a much better track record of reply emails and calls than any of the executive recruiters in many other countries. also for the ones who are not familiar with executive recruiting: these are firms that are contracted by a company for sepcific search assignments to fill high level openings. they usually tend to get a fee of up to 30% (even upfront when it is a retained search vs a contingency search) of the first year's salary from the employer. their only task is to find the most suitable candidate for each specific assignment, therefore, they are not going to be in touch with job searchers, unless they feel that he/she could be a potential candidate for a current active search assignment.
also, it is important to know that there is a trend in turkey to involve more and more the services of executive recruitment firms when staffing high-level jobs.
recruitment agencies are a different animal and there might be differences in proffessional behavior.
