Well I didn't expect that there would be so many shops selling decorations and trees in this (secular I know) muslim country. Even bloody carrefour is selling shed loads of musical santas! What has surprised me more is the range of people buying them - I would have perhaps expected the upper classes who seem to eductae their children abroad to be influenced but I've seen little old grannies in headscarves happily perusing snowmen and angels.
What next, the muezzin singing jingle bells?
Is this all a very recent invention and is it confined to Istanbul/the other areas where more westerners live or is the influence creeping in everywhere?

its not xmas but new years they are commercializing. soon you will see people hired to dress like santas and give away free products (used to advertise their store) and then get mobbed by people wanting to get something free.

Perhaps we should point out that to commercialise NY they don't need singing santas just overcrowded bars charging a fortune for entry and lots of alcohol. Speaking of which and as my annual 3-day hangover draws near what exactly is the done thing in Istanbul for new years eve?

the done thing is to eat loads and get wankered as Charly would put it. Keep an eye on the meet ups categorie as Pinar is organisng some club. she did one last new years and had 450 people around.

Excellent. I'm so glad that human beings all round the world have a shared love in all things drunken. Maybe there's hope in this little blue green planet afterall.

If there is such a coktail I'm sure you have drunk it - I'm eternally impressed by your prowess in that regard!

at jeannettes party we had something what we ended calling sutlu cay (milky tea) in the little tea glasses. zambooka, whiskey and baileys for the milky effect which went down the hatch in one. great stuff but wish Jeannette was still here
