A few years ago I had a gap in my residency permit & 'forgot' to go on a visa run. After six months I figured 'what the hell' and did the following;
- Got a new passport (30 quid) having 'lost' the old one. - Waited 2 months 28 days (not recommended!) - Went to the airport 3 hours before my flight to Cyprus, and told the guys that I'd lost my passport the day I came to Turkey... and had since lost the police report, etc. - Went to see the 'General Manager' of the customs police. Put on my most innocent face. - They let me go without any action (other than an exit stamp) after 1/2 hour.
I don't know what the procedure is now. I believe that certainly the US (and maybe the UK?) keep a register of people 'losing' their passports abroad. They don't like it if you do it too often! (for obvious reasons). I don't know if the customs computers have database access to check for foreigners (by doing a 'name search'), I _guess_ not?
I'm certainly not recommending the above - as my experience was in 1996. Things may well have changed.

PS. Where is the easiest place for a visa run from Istanbul now that you can't walk over the Bulgarian border?TEXT

Your entry and exit records are on computer. I know this as I tried to import some stuff last year and customs noticed a stamp missing in my wifes passport so we had to go to the police station at the airport in Yesilkoy. They printed a list of every time my wife had been in and out in the country for the last 5 years. My best advice is just go to the airport with an innocent face. allow to be taken up to the punishment office. be polite and use your best Turkish and then try and give a backhander.
As for the border run, ever thought about going through the Ipsala gate into Greece?
