I suppose I am underwhelmed by the relief effort offered up so far for this disaster (+40K dead) and was wondering what you would forsee if this same disaster had happened in a WASP country- UK, US, OZ, NZ etc. As it is, it seems relegated to 5 minute news blurbs... and I suppose all Aisan news here in the US gets the same attention (yawn... 200,000 dead in Bangladesh, zzzzz 250 million homeless by flood in China... 1500 dead in Indian ferry).
If any 'white' country had sustained 40,000 dead there would be billions of dollars pouring in, not the paltry 15 million UD $, or 1 million Japan $, or 30 million Euro $ in aid. Kudos to OZ who has offered 10 million so far. I suppose the UN could offer to give some of it's ilegal oil for food skimmings, and that would certainly amount to hundreds of millions... Kofi Anan certainly could give his son's ill-gotten money...
Are we that racist that we don't recognize the same need no matter where the disaster occurs? Are their needs any less?
