The duty free staff who yesterday would only let me buy 2 bottles of alcohol upon arrival at Attaturk. I don;t understand how in the past I've managed to buy unlimited quantities and now all of a sudden it's prohibited.

Maybe with this air of EU entry they are clamping down. Didnt you try and give them a back hander?

I tried 2 or 3 different checkouts with the same answer at all. The really stupid thing is that they have special offers on Scotch whereby you buy 3 bottles and get 1 free - now how are you supposed to do that with a 2 bottle allowance???
My own guess was that maybe someone important was around and that it will be back to normal by next week.

i'm not sure what is going on, but around the time the EU decided to get turkey started with the memebrship process in december, i had the same experience, however, this happened flying into germany!! they had never ever done such a check (arriving from any country as far as i know), but all people from the thy flight were individually checked to see if we were exceeding duty free allowances or trying to sneak in stuff without paying duty...and all of this even before we got to the baggage claim area...very strange behavior

Dodgy Turks eh! My mates have had no trouble in the past week buying in the UK and in Ataturk. Sounds like you had some bad luck Simonb. (I too depend on the arrivals duty free for my lifeblood.)
