i moved to istanbul in 1990. i lived my first year over a car park in sisli. it was a nightmare. the next two years were spent behind the selimiye kisla - my garden wall was the wall surrounding the first army HQ. it was an interesting area but best of all, there was little pollution and no car traffic (it was a cul de sac) and i had a garden and trees and every evening at 5, the soldiers and the drummer would march past to take down the flag. every morning they'd march back and put it up. it was fun.
the best part was that we had water all the time. i don't know if istanbul still has water problems, but the asian side usually had more water than the european side.
the next seven years were spent back on the european side. the pollution almost killed me and so i'm no longer living in istanbul. stop knockin' the asian side. it is a lovely place to live!! at least that is my recollection. thecybele

I actually think its an ok place to live if you have a family, but for single people who like to have a social life its no good.
Up where we live its not so polluted, and its very green, its actually less busy than the more popular areas on the asian side. I also have found the Asian side to be very snobby, I hate feeling like I have to dress up just to go have a cup of tea down the road.
Now granted there are a lot of areas over there that are not snobby, but they arent nice either, so whats the point of living there.

I have lived on both sides of the Bosphorus. It was really convenient when we lived in Beþiktaþ but terribly crowded. Then we lived for a while near Etiler -- NOT out of choice (we lived in university housing for free). We then were fortunate enough to buy an apartment with a garden in Beylerbeyi. I like living here because it's easy to get anywhere. I'd have to admit that I would hate living anywhere else on the Asian side. Most places are terribly congested and unfriendly places to live. Either very businessy or terribly residential. I think I have the best of both world. But of course, I'm awfully lucky to have access to a garden -- this is not possible most places in Istanbul. ..

Almost 3 months since someone posted anything in here. It just proves as I always thought......there is no life or hope for the asian side!

it proves exactly .... NOTHING! has it ever sprung to mind that the Asian side has an abundance of life. and that those living there don't spend their time indoors behind the computer trying to upp their position to that of a 'Forum waste of timer' but instead enjoy life on this side of the Bosporus.

what the hell are you talking about??? stick for your what??? you too boring to have a REAL pet - like a boxer?? tsk tsk tsk.
when i lived on the asian side, my life was much more 'civilized'... we also had water 24/7 over there. on the asian side (way back when) everything was 'ify'... and the traffic was horrendous.
if i had to return to istanbul to live (over my dead body) i'd certainly choose the asian side again.

A stick for my terrapin 'snappy'. Unless you call them by another name in american english. I have had him for 2 years and loves being fed live bugs and chasing children.
