My company is encouraging us to donate to the tsunami appeal. I wonder how it works when your country gives millions. Do people think they've actually donated through this? Or do they feel compelled/obliged to give more?

Hello there, As someone from the worst hit city of Aceh in Indonesia, I can tell you from my limited experience in dealing with the relieft-effort back home that it is more viable to donate through reliable NGOs rather than tunelling it through goverment channels. (maybe coz they're covering larger scope of priority areas? I dunno). But however this doesn't necessarily mean that goverment are totally incapable of delivering the aid, its just normally the aid will go through many beaurocratical process before they reach the victims. On the other hand, NGOs that are right in the field can access the victim more effectively because of the simpler procedures. Once enough funds are raised, they send volunteers to the spot and try to wisely spend the money for foods or general needs (tents, body-bags, medicines etc). Just like that. I know some NGOs in Istanbul that are doing works on this if any of you insterested to know. But err..this is not what you're asking is it? Sorry I dunno how the exact flow-chart of the money going in the the government case.. -Henri
